FACULTY & STAFF

Independent Study Process

Steps for faculty and students to register for Individual Study (HIS 401 and 402) and Directed Readings (HIS 697):

  1. After the student is advised, the faculty member contacts the department scheduler to add a section to Banner, including the course number and number of credit hours for the section.
  2. The scheduler responds with the CRN and section number after the course section is added to Banner.
  3. The student initiates the registration process by using this form on the Spartan Central web site and follows the instructions: https://spartancentral.uncg.edu/forms/permission-to-register-for-independent-study/. Make sure that the research topic title does not duplicate another class title and keep in mind that it will appear on the transcript.
  4. The form is forwarded to the faculty member for approval.
  5. The faculty member forwards it to the department head for approval.
  6. The department head forwards it to the registrar's office for approval.
  7. For HIS 401 and 402, the registrar's office registers the student after they approve it.
  8. For HIS 697, the student is registered by the The Graduate School after the Graduate Dean's approval.
  9. Before the beginning of classes, the faculty member and the student meet to complete the Outline of Plan for Independent Study Form, which summarizes the expectations for the independent study. The student and the faculty keep a copy for their personal records.
  10. If the student is an undergraduate, they give a copy to the undergraduate secretary for their student file. If the student is a graduate student, they give a copy to the graduate secretary for their student file. These can be emailed.

Steps for faculty and students to register for Honors independent study sections (HIS 491, 492, 493):

  1. Contact the honors liaison, currently Dr. Asa Eger. He will contact the department scheduler with the necessary information.

Steps for faculty and students to register for Advanced Topics (HIS 692):

  1. Student is advised by the Director of Graduate Studies.
  2. Student contacts the faculty member after the DGS approves HIS 692.
  3. The faculty member contacts the department scheduler to add the HIS 692 section.
  4. Student registers for HIS 692 section, NOT the corresponding 300-level class section.
  5. Before the beginning of classes, the faculty member and student meet to complete the Advanced Topics form outlining the additional work that will be done to make the class graduate level, keeps a copy for their personal records, and gives a copy to the graduate secretary for their student file. This can be emailed.

(Advanced Topics is a rare circumstance and should only be an option if a 300-level class is covering a topic specifically relative to the student's research and is not offered at the graduate level.)
