Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Learn about the past to prepare for your future with a degree in history from UNC Greensboro.

Offered on-campus and online, this major enables students to obtain their degree completely over the web, not a single visit to campus required, while delivering the same high level of intellectual engagement and support from faculty and staff as in our face-to-face classes.

Public History Concentration

The Public History Concentration prepares students for careers and graduate study in public history or museum studies (historic sites, history museums, community organizations, nonprofit work, and more). This is an exciting and growing new field. Students will explore the presence and power of the past in new ways. Through a sequence of courses, student in the Public History concentration will examine how popular conceptions of the past get shaped, how public memory shapes individual and collective action, where history can be found in the contemporary landscape, how historic sites are preserved and documented, and how professional public historians work to interpret and share the past with audiences. Students will also learn the skills of public historians, such as oral history, exhibit design, and digital history methods. The concentration will provide a new way to look at the power and relevance of history, including its connections to civic engagement and social change, and a new way to see history as relevant.

Secondary Education (BA)

Change the world and do what you love by becoming a history teacher. This program prepares you for teaching social studies to grades 9-12. Graduates of this program are empowered to help future students understand history as not simply a compilation of facts to be memorized, but rather a way of thinking about the world.

Undergraduate Minors
MAster of Arts (MA)

Our Master of Arts in history offers excellent training in research and writing skills. Students may concentrate their studies on any area of American, European, or World history, provided they choose an appropriate faculty member to serve as a main advisor for their subject. Graduates from our M.A. program often go on to Ph.D. programs or find employment in teaching, government, and business.

Museum Studies Concentration

The MA in History/Museum Studies Program teaches the craft of the historian and the theory and skills of public practice. Our mission is to unearth history while building community. As a result, every semester students and faculty engage with the local community to complete collaborative projects that make a difference in our region (exhibitions, public programs, websites). We bridge theory and practice while making a positive impact in our world.

Ph.D. in History
United States History in a Global Context

The PhD program prepares students to teach and conduct research in American history and to understand it within a global perspective. Students integrate their major field of study, American history, with world history.

This broader intercontinental perspective – including the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa – enables students to explore themes such as the interaction of political, economic, and cultural systems, questions of race and ethnicity, gender, and the transnational dimensions of national experience.
